Placer gold was first discovered in 1907 with intermittent work carried out up to World War II. This work recognized the existence of placer gold in Mud Springs Gulch, Tub Springs Gulch and Rosebud Gulch. In the 1930's an exploration program encompassing the excavation of approximately 30 shafts was undertaken in Mud Springs Gulch. These studies identified significant quantities of coarse gold at purity (fineness) of 87% situated close to bedrock.

More recently, in 1978, Major Barite Inc. established a barite mining and milling operation on the property and for a period of time successfully processed barite ore from a number of open pits on the property.

In 1984, J. Uhalde purchased the property and mill. Subsequent modifications were made rendering the operation suitable for processing gold-bearing gravels. Uhalde successfully mined the placer deposits in 1994, processing several thousand cubic yards in that year. Grades varied from .015 to .06 ounces per cubic yard from the Black Rock Canyon.

In 1983, approximately 9,000 cubic yards of material was processed from Tub Springs Gulch with an average grade of 0.03 ounces per cubic yard.

In 1993, several 50 cubic yard bulk samples were tested from the Lower Black Rock Canyon area with an average grade of 0.045 ounces per cubic yard.
